ABIM Foundation Focus – Spring 2016

New Partnership to Reduce Low-Value Care

We are partnering with AcademyHealth to advance efforts aimed at reducing low-value health care. A key component of this partnership will be the AcademyHealth and ABIM Foundation Research Community on Low-Value Care, a learning network that will accelerate the development of the evidence base in this area, as well as facilitate the exchange of innovative methods and strategies to reduce low-value care. To join the community, e-mail RC-LVC@academyhealth.org.

Profiles in Professionalism

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new section on our website entitled “Profiles in Professionalism.” This monthly feature spotlights thoughts or personal anecdotes from physicians on medical professionalism. Its goal is to showcase medical professionalism “in real life” through examples of how it can or does affect physicians in daily practice. This month’s story highlights the erosion of trust that occurs among team members when people fail to “show up.”

Choosing Wisely® Roadshow

ABIM Foundation EVP and COO Daniel Wolfson has been visiting a number of Choosing Wisely society partners to hear their thoughts about potential future directions of the campaign and learn more about their current efforts to reduce overuse. The first stops of the roadshow were to the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Radiology, two of the first specialty societies to join in the campaign. Read more about Mr. Wolfson’s visits and what he learned in his most recent Letter from the Foundation.

Professionalism Challenge Grants

The four winning projects of the Professionalism Challenge grant program were announced on April 5. The Professionalism Challenge was created to support physicians as they develop projects to help overcome obstacles that inhibit them from performing their work according to the principles and commitments defined in the Physician Charter. The grants run from April 2016 through March 2018.

Awards of $25,000 each were given to the following organizations:

  • Albany (Georgia) Area Primary Health Care
  • Henry Ford Hospital
  • Paoli Hospital
  • University of California, Los Angeles
  • Professionalism Article Prize Winners

Professionalism Article Prize Winners

Recipients of the sixth annual John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize were announced on April 18. The three winning articles were published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, Professions & Professionalism and Academic Medicine, and explored pressing professionalism challenges facing physicians, including the relationship between physician satisfaction, well-being and quality of care, and how remediation approaches can be designed to foster professionalism behaviors.
