Carmen Guerra | Health Care Org. Exemplars in Community Engagement as a Strategy in Building Trust

Dr. Carmen Guerra is the Ruth C. and Raymond G. Perelman Associate Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Guerra is a general internist and a diplomate of the ABIM. She is also the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine and the Associate Director of Diversity and Outreach for the Abramson Cancer Center, where she also co-leads the center’s Community Outreach and Engagement. Dr. Guerra is a health equity researcher. She and her team have led research on breast and colorectal cancer screening interventions, including patient navigation, and colorectal cancer “Screen to Save” and “Flu-FIT” programs, which have engaged over 5000 underserved, racial and ethnic minority residents of Philadelphia in cancer screenings. She has authored the current American Cancer Society’s colorectal cancer screening guidelines, which reduced the starting age for screening to 45, the cervical cancer screening guidelines, which allow for screening with HPV testing alone (without a Pap smear), and the current HPV vaccination guidelines. Dr. Guerra serves as the American Cancer Society Board Scientific Officer for the National Board of Directors, chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, and a member of the Mission Outcomes, Health Equity and Clinical Guideline Development committees. For her dedication and volunteer service to the society, in 2017 she received the prestigious St. George National Award. Dr. Guerra completed her medical degree and Internal Medicine training at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
